The Mau water tower: financing a landscape back to life

The Mau Forest Complex is where a third of Kenya’s water story begins. Twelve rivers rise in these hills; the Mara among them. By the time our aggregation work started, the forest had spent three decades losing that argument — excisions, encroachment, and a restoration effort that never quite escaped the project cycle.

ESOK’s approach treats the Mau as one programme of record, not a scattering of projects: 32,000 hectares across Narok and Nakuru counties, assembled from county land, community forest associations and water-tower agency mandates, with a blended structure pairing public restoration finance with private carbon offtake.

Landscapes do not fail for lack of planting. They fail for lack of staying power.

Financial close on the first phase is the milestone; staying power is the point. The structure funds a decade of monitoring, pays community associations for verified outcomes, and — for once — puts the calendar of the forest ahead of the calendar of the funders.
