Growing the profession: notes from our student chapters

There are thirty-one ESOK campus chapters now, from Nairobi to Chuka, and the Green Careers programme just closed its busiest year. The obvious read is growth. The honest read is a lesson about what students actually want.

They do not want another inspiration session. Ask a final-year environmental science student what she needs and the answer is blunt: attachment that pays, work that counts, and a profession she can see herself inside. So we stopped hosting panels and started issuing rosters — real tasks on live ESOK projects, from GIS support in the Tana Delta to community surveying in the Mau.

The internships board matched four hundred placements this year. But the number that matters is smaller: nine of the graduates who came through chapter rosters are now on the Leadership Programme. The pipeline is not a metaphor. It is staffed.
